Must-visit beer beaches
• Jul 2nd, 2010 • Category: travel, wishful drinkingAs summer continues to unfold, I can’t help but envy and despise all of you lucky beach combers within walking distance of the salty sea breeze. This summer, while landlocked in the Arizona desert, I’m sticking close to the beach-worthy beer guide DRAFT contributor Molly Petrilla amassed (Read: close my eyes, sit close to a fan and imagine the sound of crashing waves while sipping on those beers). But for all of you on the coast, here are a few must-visit places where fresh beer’s a conch shell throw away.
Beach Chalet, San Francisco Bay
Gaze out onto placid blue waters as pastel sailboats flirt with the great wide Pacific. Located above the Golden Gate Park Visitor’s Center, Beach Chalet spoils patrons with exquisite American fare, house beer (try the Sampler of Six Ales for a mere $8), panoramic views of the ocean and easy access to Pacific Beach.
Coronado Brewing, Coronado Island
Nestled in the heart of San Diego Bay, Coronado Island is an easy escape from the big city, with views of downtown San Diego, the Pacific Ocean and good, old-fashioned American muscle (there’s a rather large naval base on the island). Pick up a sixer of Islander Pale Ale and stroll to your heart’s content.
Coney Island Brewing, Coney Island
The crafty genius behind Shmaltz Brewing brings you Coney Island beer. Head on down to the ol’ timey fun of Ferris wheels, water pistol racing and oversized stuffed animals for a pint of Sword Swallower, and a day of blindingly pale East Coast physiques.
Pelican Pub & Brewery, Cape Kiwanda
Ever wished you could spend the night at a brewery that’s located on a ridiculously breathtaking beach? So have all of us at DRAFT. Walk barefoot along the rustic beaches of Oregon, then head back about 50 feet for a pint of Kiwanda Cream Ale.
Maui Brewing, Lahaina
The island of Maui sings a siren’s song, and if you’re actually in Maui reading this post right now you’ve got some messed up priorities. Azure waters, white and black sand beaches, friendly dolphins and smiling locals: Lahaina is Xanadu for beach-loving beer geeks. Grab a six-pack of Big Swell IPA cans and hit the beach.
